About the Author

Anna Milbourne (Author)
Growing up on the Wirral and in Germany, Anna wrote plays about talking animals, and stories about naughty children, and drew on every available surface. After school, she did an Art Foundation course, then a degree in German Literature & Philosophy at Oxford University. In 1998 she found her perfect job at Usborne in London, writing about everything from curious penguins to trips to the Moon.

Ruth Brocklehurst (Author)
When she wasn’t riding her bike or making things out of loo rolls and scraps of fabric, Ruth spent her childhood reading about detectives and historical figures. She has written and edited countless books for Usborne – some about detectives and historical figures; some about dinosaurs, scientists and astronauts.

These are timeless stories to be told again and again.
When a child is old enough to read for itself these are stand alone stories with easy to read words. When my granddaughter and her partner were expecting their first child they asked family and friends to each buy a book that they themselves have liked – as a gift for the baby. What a wonderful idea. This meant bedtime stories to be told, later on for them to read themselves, books not just for little children but others to read as they grow older. This means they have an whole library of their own, (with an extending book shelf of coarse) This book was an easy choice for me – l have loved these stories telling them to my daughter as in turn she has told them to her daughter. My great granddaughter is now 2 months old and not knowing of these tales but l’m sure she is going to love these stories as much as l do even though it’s 4 generations on. These are timeless stories to be told again and again.

Some rather odd story choices here
We know that a lot of traditionally told fairy stories are quite dark – Hansel and Gretel and their witch, for example. I don’t mind that necessarily But I’d forgotten quite how odd some of HCA’s fables are. The Tin Soldier, for example, who falls out of the window, has a load of adventures and (spoiler) ends up being thrown in the fire. Good luck explaining that to your 4 year old. This is a handsome book but I think it’s been thrown together without any thought. The Pirate Stories version has a similar problem. For that reason I can’t recommend.
