About the Author
Shannon Messenger graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she learned—among other things—that she liked watching movies much better than making them. She’s studied art, screenwriting, and film production, but she realized her real passion was writing stories for children. She’s the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of the award-winning middle grade series, Keeper of the Lost Cities, as well as the Sky Fall series for young adults. Her books have been featured on multiple state reading lists, published in numerous countries, and translated into many different languages. Warning: This review is quite long and contains spoilers up to Legacy.
Warning: This review is quite long and contains spoilers up to Legacy. Tbh, the first book wasn’t bad, I actually thought it was pretty good, but it slowly went downhill from there. First off, the main character, Sophie, is already horrible to begin with. Almost everyone who meets her like her, which can be seen very obviously every time she’s in a tribunal. She always either gets a light punishment or walks away with zero charges. Aren’t the Elves supposed to be fair and just? She’s also a Y/n and Mary Sue rolled into one. By the end of the first book, she’s already a Telepath, Polyglot and Inflicter. Plus she’s the only Enhancer in the entire Elven world. Like what?? Plus, the series is very long with much direct speech and Shannon (the author) drags a lot of the words. I had to pay really close attention at times. If you’re going to make each of your books 300 plus pages long, at least make the contents interesting. What I also don’t really or see at all in kotlc is diversity. I mean, you’ve got a couple of black and asian people, but overall it’s very Caucasian. Another thing that is very confusing and frustrating is the whole matchmaking thing. It’s supposed to match elves with other elves so that their kids get the best genes. Get what I mean? They only match boys with girls or girls with boys. So what if an elf is queer? Or gender fluid, or trans? And with the whole bad match thing, it feels very homophobic. If a guy dated another guy, they would get scorned because of the straight matching thing. Shannon? Overall, the whole series is very straight, and there’s eight books. How can you not fit a little representation in there? The seven and eighth book are probably the ones that drag the plot the most. They focused SO much on the love triangle, which is between Sophie, Fitz and Keefe. of course. (Can’t be Y/n if you don’t have a million guys falling over each other) There are at least more than 100 pages where Sophie seems to be stuck choosing one over the other. Tbh, neither of the guys are really good matches with Sophie, what with Fitz being super controlling and NOT handling his anger issues well to Keefe being super reckless and joining the Neverseen, but team Keefe all the way. Next is how unoriginal kotlc is. If you put it side by side to Harry Potter, there are so many similarities, for example; The Black Swan/The Order of the Phoenix, The Neverseen/The Death Eaters, Fintan/ (or Lady Gisela depending on your choice) The Lord with no nose. And there are so many plot twists it’s just beyond complex. Furthermore, almost each and every one of the books have a cliffhanger. Sure, it was funny and a LITTLE frustrating at first, but it just slowly became irritating. And Shannon always apologises for it and says that she loves every one of us in the acknowledgements. If you love us so much, maybe stop with the cliffhangers?? The next thing is how rude and mean Sophie is to her friends, especially Dex. How can you be so clueless that you don’t notice that your best friend has a crush on you? Not to mention she totally forgot that Marella existed until she needed her help. Even though she was clueless of what Marella was going through, it shouldn’t have taken her FOUR books to simply find out about it and apologise. Which is totally the opposite of how Sophie treats Fitz, who is three years older the her. Compared to other age gaps, it’s not that bad, but still. EW. Second, she describes him as handsome and super dashing and stuff. Girl I could name ten celebrities more handsome than that blue-nightlight-eyed guy. I was practically over the moon when they broke up. Since I’m already on the Sophie Slander Train I might as well rant about the many cringe-worthy things the blonde I’m-not-like-other-girls has done. “Her hair glistened in the sunlight” Shannon, really? Also, almost all of the guys, Tam, Dex, Keefe, Fitz, even Wylie, show some romantic interest in her. And in every book, you can count on Sophie to make a big deal out of girly stuff. Everyone also fawns over her brown eyes wherever she goes, which is really ironic since more than 50% of the human population has brown eyes. Another thing that infuriates me is how stereotypical the coloured characters are. As an asian person, the way Shannon depicts Linh and Tam is annoying, with the whole “I hate my strict parents and am super rebellious” thing. Plus, most of the gnomes are dark-skinned and love to work for the elves. For “fun”. There are so.many.characters. Whenever a character appeared, I had to flip back to the start of the book to remember who they were. And the “good” guys are so clueless when fighting the Neverseen, it’s almost like they’re just running around blindfolded. And the fact that a thirteen-year-old broke into one of the safest Elven databases with a machine that had sticks stuck in it is so illogical it’s hilarious. There’s also the fact that the elves think that they’re so superior to humans. At least in Harry Potter the wizards were okay with the muggles. In kotlc, the creatures and elves are always saying how violent humans are and insulting science and theories and saying how they are SO much better than humans. Excuse me, at least we advanced without magic, not to mention doing it in less than a couple of thousand years. And the elves have indefinite lifespans, so… I think this is all for my review. I could probably go even more in depth but I’m not gonna waste my breath. If you’re looking for a book series to read, don’t bother wasting your money on kotlc.

I love this series so much! Legacy did come a bit damaged but it was bound to happen anyway.

NO SPOILER REVIEW
The books arrived in great condition. The only thing I questioned was why 2 of the book felt glossy but the rest had a lovley matt feel to them. They are floppy and easy to ope without cracking the spine. Overall I am happy with it and it was worth the money. Recommend

This must be the UK version, covers are slightly different
The covers are just slightly different than the USA versions. Not sure why it matters to my 9 year old, but it does.

Couldn’t put them down
Was given the first book by a child in class to read. I was hooked straight away! Have now read all titles including 8.5 and am eagerly awaiting the 9 in the series.
