Beware of the stereotypes !
The book is really useful and helped me a lot to improve my English, the exercises are interesting and varied. Nevertheless, I was really shocked to read the chapter about “Men and women : long life to the difference” and the exercises about this text as they are full of stereotypes and do not use the latest scientific researches about the subject.- For instance, the book will say that men use the left side of their brain more than their right side (and the opposite situation for women), but studies have now proved it is not true and, even so, if left side is related to “logic/rationality”, there is a world between assuming that and concluding men are “more skilled at maths”. Same thing, if we find the “communication and creating thinking” area in the right side of the brain, does it necessarily mean that women are more able to “tune into specific stimuli such as a baby crying at night” ??? We all use both our right and left brain, and there are no significant differences between men and women on this subject. You’ll find prove of the obsolescence of the “right brain/left brain theory” in many serious websites (scientific or not), such as here to give a concrete example http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/nov/16/left-right-brain-distinction-myth .Other example : the book relies on what John Gray has written in his famous book “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” without saying it is a very controversial book and what are its contra-arguments, in the scientific field (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Myth-Mars-Venus-different/dp/0199550999) as in its intrinsic nature (are values/motivation/language/need for intimacy NATURALLY different according to our essence/genes ? Isn’t our identity, on the contrary, built up by the society in which we grow up, step by step and from our little childhood ?).- About the exercises, we are asked in the exercise 5.7 to indicate which “characteristics or habits” (rational thinking/role of homemaker/need to think alone) can be attributed to men, and which one can be attributed to women. I didn’t know they were gender differences and not individual differences, in my ignorant mind I thought there were as many differences between one man and one woman than between two men (or between two women). I’m not sure it’s fair to “naturalize” differences that can be seen in the society but do exist because of the society, and are about to change all the time.Even worse (in my opinion), we are asked in the exercise 5.11 to tell if for these following positions (leader of a country, a CEO of a multinational company, a family counselor, a homecare worker for elderly people) it would be better to chose a woman or a man. Thank you so much for enforcing these painful stereotypes, we really needed to know that power positions are for men and caring positions for women…I was really disappointed and upset while reading this chapter, even more because this book is a recent one (from 2013) and gives a lot of information about the latest discovery in scientific fields in the other chapters EXCEPT this one. Please modify it or suppress it for the following edition because it doesn’t reflect the quality of the book, which I would have recommended if there weren’t all these sexist stereotypes.

I read a couple of articles and want to write a review.I speak English well, but I still can’t read magazines and newspapers. Too heavy text. That’s why I bought this book to practice reading. I really like the content of the book. Very modern and interesting articles. Now I read when I have breakfast. I advise everyone to buy this book who speaks English well, but is still in the process of improvement!
