Great for English, Not so great for Japanese.
I purchased this book for my son so my husband could read it to him in Japanese. My husband was only educated up to 5th grade in Japan before moving to the U.S., so his knowledge of reading & writing in Japanese is limited, making this book too advanced for him to read. When my father-in-law came for a visit (who was born, raised, & college educated in Japan) I asked him to read the book to my son. He was unable to do so due to of the level of Kanji being too advanced for him as well. The story is cute & I read it to him in English, which is probably about 2nd or 3rd grade level, but I feel it was kind of a waste looking for something that was in Japanese. I wish that the Japanese text was written in Hiragana only.

Aw Very Cute!
I’m 28 and trying to teach myself Japanese and seeing as I am basically at below elementary level I thought this book would be good. There are Kanji and Kanji combinations in here that I have not yet seen. It is good practice for me; I can look up the Kanji and continue reading the book; and it builds my vocabulary.I didn’t realize 6-year-olds have such a grasp of Kanji; I should’ve guessed since it is their L1 language.I am looking to buy more books of the same age group to further my study.

Japanese/English bilingual edition
There is too few of these bilingual picture books out there. “Too many pears!” is one of the few Japanese/English bilingual picture books for bilingual kids. I do not think this version is intended for Japanese language learners. Although original (English) text is simple enough for preschoolers to read, Japanese translation used in this book is probably 5th or 6th grade level Japanese and clearly intended for parents/adults to read it to children. Very cute story about a cow who loves pears.

Love the book, but I took off one star because I wish it were only written in Hiragana/Katakana, or at least had Furigana. As an English speaker, all the Kanji makes it a bit hard for me to read it to my children.

Written with some kanji – not for beginner-beginners.
I bought this book for my college Japanese class. We have to read an all-hiragana children’s book in front of the class for our midterm. Unfortunately, this is not a typical children’s Japanese book. A lot of basic (basic for Japanese children I suppose) kanji is used on each page, but unlike regular children’s books, there’s no hiragana below the kanji to help you read. Amazon’s “look inside” feature was no help, because it didn’t show the English/Japanese version, and because of the title, I had to assume the Japanese parts were written in hiragana/katakana too. Thankfully I have an 8-year-old daughter so I gave her the book. The story itself is just okay to me as an adult, but she likes it.

I teach for Head Start and this is one of my kid’s favorite books. Great illustrations. A book you can enjoy reading over and over again.

Fun bilingual book
I used this book for Elementary Spanish classes. The language is simple enough and there are some good vocabulary words. It is a funny story and the children liked the silly illustrations.

I don’t like the Japanese translation
I don’t like the Japanese translation. It sounds very awkward like a student did that. I am disappointed with the Japanese part, but my toddlers enjoyed reading in both languages.

Kid’s lit.
This is an excellent book for reading to a younger child, and an excellent book for a slightly older child to read to him/herself.
